Hutt River Province

It is amazing the things you can find cruising around the 'net. I especially like browsing through the various articles in Snopes. It's more than just a reference guide to urban legends and myths.

Today I learned about the Hutt River Province, an 18,500 acre piece of land contained within Western Australia that has declared secession from the Australian government in 1970 after a dispute over crop quotas. The principality is ruled over by Prince Leonard who claims protection by Royal Prerogative under the British Royalty system (if I understand how that all works. Those crazy Brits...). They print their own money, their own postage stamps, have their own flag, and are now a popular tourist location, apparently near Geraldton.

How did I miss that when I was over there (I passed through Geraldton)? That is awesome.

Amazig. It actually exists. It's one of those things you would think is a hoax.

Imaging having the "Hutt River Provence" stamp in your pasport. Custos in other countrys would be like "WTF?"

The following URL is a transcript of an interview with Prince Leonard by the ABC (Australian Broardcasting Corporation). The ABC in Australia is government owned, so it must be true.

It looks like one of those paintings of decesed relatives you seen in houses with old money.
